Cake - Comfort Eagle
Star rating: 5/5
Cake's fourth effort, Comfort Eagle, really sees the band coming into its own. Many tracks from this release are staples of indie rock music lover's collections everywhere. But what is it about Cake that is so appealing? Does everyone really like Cake?
Unsurprisingly, just like the spongey dessert they share their name with, it is hard to find someone who doesn't like "Short Skirt/Long Jacket". A critical and commercial success, this album never ceases to please. The instrumentation and production of the record don't differ substantially from previous releases, but as a whole Comfort Eagle is a polished masterpiece that has us coming back for more again and again.
Top Tracks & Takeaways
This reviewer's favorite song is "Commissioning a Symphony in C", in which the lyrics detail the life of an Austrian nobleman who pays to have a symphony commissioned in the key of, well, you guessed it: C! Its sarcastic lines are a satirical view of the upper class and the privilege they enjoy. It also describes the symphony in detail, which in turn tells us the way the song John McCrea wrote it. "Built on victorious, young, triads".
Other top tracks include "Shadow Stabbing" and "Comfort Eagle". The latter being a criticism of consumerism likening the marketing of products to young people in a cult-like way. The minor riffs are heavy and the beat is relentless. Cake really does know how to round out a groove.
What we liked...
All the guitar riffs on the record exude that grunge sound we crave. It also has enough variety that we don't get bored listening. Heck, put this album on repeat, baby! "Love You Madly" is a total classic. It is also important to mention "Long Line of Cars", which is the hidden gem of the lot.
Not so much...
It is a shame there aren't more tracks on this album. We would have tolerated fifteen, or even twenty songs. "Arco Arena", an instrumental track, could be more interesting with words.

Short Skirt/Long Jacket
This is one of the strongest selections from Cake's discography. It has hits, but none outshine the whole. Each song is a satisfying journey, but you should listen to the whole thing start to finish. You will not be disappointed. Five stars out of five for excellent songwriting and a timeless sound!
